When Alpe d'Huez became a ski resort in 1936, it had 3 hotels and as many as 2 ski lifts out of a dozen existing in France at the time. Since then, Alpe d’Huez has continuously expanded on the southern flank of the Grandes Rousses Massif. Built in 1986, the “Les Grand Rousses DMC” has maintained its central role in the massif’s ski area ever since, serving a third of the 133 slopes in the area. Having passed major inspections with flying colors for more than 30 years, the “Les Grand Rousses DMC” deserved nothing less than a state-of-the-art rope for the replacement of the double carrying-hauling rope: 14 km of Solitec® Max7 were installed in April 2021, amounting to a total of 92 tons of steel wire rope. Thanks to the rope’s excellent running smoothness and hardly perceptible operating noise, the DMC’s 25-passenger cabins now carry passengers from the bottom terminal at 1,860 m to the intermediate terminal at 2,106 m and on to the top terminal at 2,163 m with significantly improved comfort. The myth lives on.
