Structural adhesive bonding for carbon fiber reinforced plastic components
For various applications, the connection of thermosetting CFRP components as well as the connection of metallic force transmission elements via a conventional adhesive bonding process constitutes the better alternative. Thus, also the material bond created by epoxy resin contributes to the high connection strength of the T-Igel® connection.
TEUFELBERGER has gained extensive experience with structural adhesive bonds for various structural CFRP components with metallic inserts.
Due to their high lightweighting potential, adhesive bonds enjoy a long-standing tradition in connecting CFRP components to metallic components. As a result, enormous quantities of adhesive ride or fly along in sports cars and aircraft.
The quality of adhesive bonds depends on a number of parameters. They include:
- the surface quality of materials to be joined
- the adhesive bonding process
- the chemical composition of the adhesive (depending on the material and the type of loading, either 2-component epoxy, acrylates, polyrurethanes, or elastic adhesives)
- the ambient conditions
- a bonding-compatible structure
- an extensive quality inspection
At TEUFELBERGER, for various CFRP component projects also structural adhesive bonding is used, in addition to the patented T-Igel® technology. In many cases, it is combined with other joining methods such as geometrical form fits and bolted or riveted connections. Primarily, we rely on 2-component epoxy adhesive systems and have many years of series-production experience in the quality control of adhesive bonds (e.g., with the hybrid CFRP/aluminum rear axle stabilizer of the Porsche 918 Spyder)
